Motivation

If I had to say what motivated me, it would probably be sandwiches. Outside of food groups however, I find inspiration from decent 80’s cheese music as well as films like Rocky, Rambo, Conan and Commando.

To make sure you stay motivated you have to keep your workouts interesting. That’s something that’s very good for muscle growth too. I always say you have to keep your body guessing! One way to do this is to give yourself little challenges for the workout. For example, every now and then I’ll decide I have to do 20% more reps than usual on each exercise. Or that I’m only aloud to rest for 20 seconds. By challenging yourself you’re guaranteed a high intensity session.

For times when I’m really beat, or ill, or drunk I sometimes do what I call an ‘express session’. This is a session that only lasts for half the time of a usual session. I’ll do say 4 exercises in about half an hour. Thing is though, often I’ll end up getting motivated by it enough to do a full-on session.

The thing is though, once you get to a certain stage you shouldn’t need to be motivated. Working out shouldn’t just be a means to an end, but an end in itself. For me at least I’m happiest when I’m lifting heavy. That’s when the world makes sense. Unlike real life you have clear set goals and nothing’s standing in your way except yourself. How you perform is entirely down to your determination and when you succeed that victory is yours alone. When you’re working out you’re pushing yourself, testing yourself and improving yourself. It’s de-stressing and it’s an act of defiance. For me it’s a way of confirming that I will never give up. When you’re working out you leave your petty concerns about work or school or relationships behind. You have less in common with your pencil pushing colleagues and more in common with the warriors and gladiators of legend! And if that hasn’t given you some motivation then nothing ever will!

In the warrior’s code there’s no surrender,
Though his body says stop, his spirit cries Never!
